The police authorities in California are practising political persecution of the Black Panther Party. The demand of that Party and the peace and freedom movement for independent observers to be stationed in the Black ghettos of California has my entire approval, as it will help to protect Black people from unjustified attacks by police and national guard occupation troops, and to protect the right to organize political movements such as the Black Panther Party. The disgraceful killing of Bobby Hutton, and the shooting and jailing of Huey P. Newton and Eldridge Cleaver, make it clear that the alternative is further brutality.
