This project was developed as a partnership between McMaster University Library, the British Library, and the departments of English and Cultural Studies at McMaster University and Toronto Metropolitan University. Initial curation of Salkey's letters to Clarke was undertaken by Myron Groover, Archives and Rare Books Librarian at McMaster University; Helen Melody, Lead Curator for Contemporary Literary and Creative Archives at the British Library, led further curation of Clarke's letters to Salkey. Dr. Ronald Cummings and Dr. Darcy Ballantyne provided the creative impetus for the project and valuable insight throughout; the invaluable assistance of Linzey Corridon in supporting these efforts and coordinating the readings cannot be overstated. McMaster University Alumni (Dave Dawson and Christine Kennedy in particular) provided technical and logistical support for the online project launch in July, and Eleanor Casson of the British Library helped to coordinate communications and logistics on the other side of the Atlantic. This virtual exhibit was designed and implemented by Myron Groover in the summer and autumn of 2024.
We are deeply grateful to the estates of Austin Clarke and Andrew Salkey for their gracious permission to use these letters, and we extend particular thanks to Beverly Bain, Darcy Ballantyne, Michael Bucknor, Honor Ford-Smith, Cecil Foster, Pamela Mordecai, Jason Salkey, Olive Senior, Dorothea Smartt, and Rinaldo Walcott for lending their time and voices to the readings. We are also grateful to McMaster University's Internationational Initiatives Micro-Fund (IIMF) for their support of this project; their funding was instrumental to co-ordinating the readings for this exhibit.
