Religion

Rueben's relationship with christianity seemed to be one of the many ways that Reuben retained a sense of normalacy despite being so far away from home. He commonly mentions attending chruch in his writings and many of his illustrations during the war included christian symbols. All of this showcases that Christianity was important to Reuben and it was likely that attending church services likely added some sense of normalacy to his life. Reminding him of the old life that he participated in back at his home.

Diary 7. 1918 October-1919 May- Church

Diary 7. 1918 October-1919 May- Church

This is an illustration present in Reuben's 7th diary that he carried during his time away from home. The fact that this church was drawn in his diary suggests something about the importance and familiarity of the church to Reuben. This is supported by the many diary entries where he discusses attending church during his time recovering from his war injuries in 1916 when he first started writing in his diary and in all his diaries after. All of this seems to indicate further the significance of church during his time away from home.

Rough translation "here lies... on the 25th of August 1914, Victor Demeose age 46 years old was cowardly murdered by the German soldiers. Pray to God for his soul."

This is another illustration done by Reuben in his diary. It is of a grave likely found in either France or Belgium. The appearance of Christian symbols in this illustration shows how people would rely on ideas of faith to help cope with the losses of friends and family during the war.

Reuben Alvin Jukes Diary 7 November 3rd Entry About Church

This is one of many entries present in Reuben Alvin Juke's diary that discusses church as a highlight of his day. Almost every Sunday, Reuben mentions that he attends church. During a time when Europe was still very largely religious, faith would have been a significant outlet for many soldiers during the war. This serves as an example of how faith was important to Reuben.
